Several Complications To Watch Out After Hernia Surgery

A hernia is a very common disease nowadays. But it is also a disease that can be easily fixed with a simple surgical process. Both open and laparoscopic hernia surgery is a very common procedure performed by surgeons. But just like all surgeries, there are some side effects and complications associated with hernia repair surgeries too.

The region where it has been operated will probably appear noticeably swollen and red. It will also usually be painful for the first few days. Over-the-counter pain or anti-inflammatory medicines may help reduce inflammation and pain although take them only after consulting from the doctor. Inflammation can also be reduced immediately by applying ice cold pack to the area once or twice every hour. Other less common, but possible complications and risks associated with hernia operation include:

Infection

This is a very common complication. Although during surgeries, surgeons take a lot of precautions to avoid infections, sometimes if care is not taken by the patient, infections can occur even after getting discharged.

Recurrence

Recurrence of the hernia can occur after the surgery. Research shows that when a mesh is used, it reduces the chances of this happening by 50%.

Seroma

A fluid-filled sac under the surface of the skin can develop where surgical incisions were made. It happens if the mesh is defective.

Nerve damage

Neuralgia or nerve pain that causes tingling or numbness can also occur. Organ or tissue damage is also one of the complications. But these are very rare.

Bleeding

Hemorrhage or internal bleeding and hematoma or pooling of blood at the wound is another complication that can occur if the wound is not healed properly.

Blood clot

Sometimes, even blood clots can occur too. These can develop when you are under anesthesia and haven’t been moved for a long period of time.

Incisional hernia

Hernia surgery causes a defect in the abdominal wall. This defect can create an area of weakness through which another hernia may develop. This occurs in 2%-10% of hernia surgeries, although some people are more prone to this risk. Even after it is repaired, incisional hernias may recurr too.

Mesh pain

This might happen if the body recognizes the mesh as a foreign object or it rubs against muscles or nerves, causing irritation and pain.

Most of these complications have become very rare in recent times with laparoscopic surgery. But in case any of these complications occur after hernia surgery it is best to consult your doctor as soon as possible.
